How are your telephone skills?
When contacting an employer or making an appointment over the phone, making a good impression requires being prepared to talk to someone immediately or to leave a clear, concise voice message.
Before you call:
- Gear Up — Have a pen, paper, calendar and any other documentation that will help you provide or receive the correct information.
- Think — What does the person on the other end need to know? What will you say if you get their voicemail?
- Write — Prepare notes to help you remember what to say. Write down the name of the person you need to speak with so you can refer to them by name.
- Practice — Practice your script before your call. How do you sound?
- Call — Speak slowly and clearly. Sit upright with pen in hand.
