Gifts to St. Joe's Inspired by Parents and Work

John Bernier Jr. first learned about St. Joseph's Home for Children through his parents.

"St. Joe's was one of the charities my mom and dad particularly liked," John says. "They gave money and they went to events at St. Joe's and donated bicycles when they were done with them."

Their example inspired John when he grew up and became a contributor to St. Joe's and Catholic Charities in general. When John's mother died, he gave a special memorial gift to St. Joe's in her honor.

"I'm fortunate to be able to do it. My folks were financially responsible. So when they were gone, they left me what they did, and I tried to put it to good use. I do what I can."

Grateful for Children's Home

John's relationship with St. Joe's extends beyond his family.

As a community service officer for 15 years with the City of Plymouth, John transported children to St. Joe's.

"If the police officers encounter a situation in which the parents can't take care of the children — for whatever reason — we try to find a relative," John says. "If there's no relative available, they make the arrangements with St. Joe's. I do the transportation."

St. Joe's provides central intake services for all Hennepin County children removed from their homes due to abuse, family emergency or instability. Last year, St. Joe’s provided basic needs and temporary shelter for 1,400 children. St. Joe's staff work with county services to find the best living arrangement for each child.

John says he's thankful for St. Joe's support of children at such a difficult time.

"I've always been very grateful for a place to take them and the people to look after them."
