Refugee Cash Assistance Migration and Refugee Services’ Refugee Cash Assistance program provides case management so refugees can meet their basic needs upon arrival in Minnesota. Through this program, single or married childless refugees and asylees receive employment referrals and cash assistance for their first eight months in the United States.
Each month, participants visit Catholic Charities to meet with a caseworker and receive assistance. The financial assistance and employment resources provided by Catholic Charities facilitate refugees’ transitions to self-sufficiency. A Wilder Research study concluded that the refugee cash assistance programs saved the state $4.64 for every dollar spent based on comparison of the programs run by the counties.
2008 Program Outcomes:
- The Refugee Cash Assistance program served 270 newly arrived refugees in 2008. All clients were referred to employment services.
