Parents' Frequently Asked Questions about St. Joe's Day and Residential Treatment programs

How do I get my son/daughter admitted into St. Joe's programs?
Visit the Admissions section for step-by-step instructions.

How much does it cost?

Unfortunately the answer to this question varies. Each program has a unique cost and is covered in many ways that could include insurance, co-pays, county payments, etc. In order to determine potential costs to you, please discuss your question with an admissions representative. Insurance companies and/or county social service agencies are often part of the decision making team in authorizing mental health treatment in Day Treatment and Residential Care.

How long will my child be in St. Joe's program?
Typically, children stay in treatment from three months to 12 months. Discharge planning begins in each of our programs at admission. We will discuss goals for your child’s treatment, your wishes and potential discharge plans as soon as your child is enrolled in one of our programs.

Will I be involved in my child’s treatment?
Family involvement is critical to the success of treatment. St. Joe’s strongly encourages family involvement in the treatment process. There will be a number of opportunities for you to participate, including family therapy, family activities in the program and weekend passes for the residential program. If you have a specific way you’d like to be involved, please be sure to let us know.

Can I visit my child while he/she’s in treatment?
Yes. Our Residential Treatment program has visits and passes structured into the treatment program. Participants in other programs should inquire how visits occur in each of those programs.

Will my child attend school during treatment?
Yes, St. Joe’s partners with Minneapolis Public Schools to operate an onsite, fully licensed school for our youth. As children get closer to discharge from our residential program we may arrange an off-site placement.

What will my child’s life be like at St. Joe's?
Life in our Residential Treatment program pretty much mirrors home life with the addition of structured treatment programming. Children receive all their meals, medication, schooling and recreational opportunities while at St. Joe’s. All of this occurs within a structured therapeutic environment. Children in Day Treatment receive a combination of treatment and schooling during the day. They will have core academic classes and receive mental health skills training, group therapy and individual therapy.

What happens after treatment?
We begin discharge planning at admission to any of our programs so you will be aware of and participate in what the discharge plan will look like. We provide aftercare services for six months after discharge from the Residential Treatment program. Mental health case managers provide aftercare to many children in our Day Treatment program.
